The Devil Wears Prada

I had just watched The Devil Wears Prada (yeah, I know it's an old movie but only now I got to watch it). I like it but I wish I had read the novel first because the novel usually tells story better then the adapted movie.

This movie is like Ugly Betty the TV series, it is about working in a fashion magazine. To start with, it was about a young girl, Andrea or Andy who had landed a job as a second personal assistant to a famous fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly. It was a job described as 'million girls would fight to get'. Andy, who was not obsessed with fashion and dressed herself in less glamorous state, found herself in an awkward environment where everybody else had their up-to-date clothes and high heels on. Apparently, it was a standard set up by Miranda unofficially.

She was advised by a fellow colleague, an art director to be exact, Nigel to change her image and follow suit the fashionable custom. Andy refused at first, saying that she would never change herself to be someone she is not. Fashion to her is not that important. Besides, she was thinking to become a serious journalist, so working in 'Runway' was part of the exposure she needed for working experience.

Anyway, after one incident in which Miranda and cruelly lectured her on her role as a personal assistant (she had failed to get a flight back to New York for Miranda the previous night, it wasn't really her fault as it was a stormy night and no aeroplane was allowed to be flying, but Miranda just being difficult and impossible!), Andy made a decision to change whatever it takes to make Miranda happy including changing her image. So with Nigel's help she changed into a fashionable, stylish girl. And she was also very committed in her work, and her relationship with her boss, Miranda improved.

Now that Andy had showed her capability and how smart she was in doing her job, Miranda had favored Andy over her first personal assistant, Emily. So one fashion show that to be held in Paris, and Emily was supposed to go, Miranda had changed her mind into taking Andy instead. Andy was reluctant, knowing how much Emily had been waiting the opportunity to go to Paris with Miranda. But Miranda didn't give her any choice, that Andy must go and Andy herself must break the news to Emily.

When Andy was about the break the news to Emily (they were talking on the handphone, Andy was in the office and Emily was running on the road, doing task for Miranda), Emily was hit by a car. Anyway, Emily was not badly injured, so Andy had to break the bad news about Paris to Emily in the hospital. Emily was obviously dissappointed with the news, so she chased Andy out from the room.

Meanwhile, there was a gap in Andy's relationship with her boyfriend and best friends eversince she worked in 'Runway'. Her boyfriend couldn't understand why Andy was so committed to Miranda that she was willing to sacrifice a lot. And without her boyfriend's knowledge, Andy met a guy who is a well-known figure in fashion world, Christian in which they became quite intimate after sometime. Before her trip to Paris, Andy somehow had quarrelled with her boyfriend and he had made her to choose; whether it's him or her job. Andy chose the latter.

In Paris, Nigel told Andy that he was going to be a creative director for this rising fashion designer, and the job was recommended by Miranda. Andy also met Christian at the fashion show and since Christian had openly flirting with her from beginning, and now she had broke up with her boyfriend, she went out with Christian and spent the night with him.

The next day when she woke up in Christian's hotel room, she accidently saw a portfolio of 'Runway' cover page. She asked Christian what was it about and Christian popped the news that Miranda's position as editor will be replaced by another person, Jacqueline (she is the editor of 'Runway' of French edition and Miranda's enemy) and Christian was going to work with the new editor. Andy was so shocked to hear the news, knowing very well how Miranda had put her whole life for 'Runway'. Besides, just the other night, Miranda had sadly confessed to Andy that her marriage was falling apart and soon there would be a divorce, so Andy felt it was her duty to tell Miranda of the news before Miranda knew about it officially.

However, throughout the day, Andy failed to tell Miranda of the news. When it came the official 'Runway' event, and Miranda had given a speech, she had announced that Jacqueline was leaving 'Runway' as she was going to be the creative director for the rising fashion designer (the one supposed to be Nigel's job). Andy, Nigel and Christian were shocked to hear the news.

In the car, Andy asked Miranda about the whole thing. Miranda had revealed that she knew about the replacement plan long before Andy did and that was why she was making her own arrangement into making Jacqueline the creative editor. Andy argued that Miranda shouldn't do it that way as Miranda had promised that the job should be Nigel's. Miranda said she had to things in order to survive and she saw Andy was no difference than she was. Andy was surprised, she couldn't agree with that. Miranda reminded her of Emily, how Andy had stabbed her in the back by accepting the offer to go to Paris. And when Andy tried to object Miranda said, yes, Andy did it to survive!

Then it occured to Andy how much she had changed and what she would become if she continued working in 'Runway'. So right after emerging from the car, Andy left her million-girls-would-fight-for job and returned to New York. She met her boyfriend and said how much she had realised that she had been wrong and she wanted to be herself again. The relationship reconciled. Then Andy went seeking for another job and at one interview, the interviewer had told her that when he called 'Runway' to get some testimonial from 'Runway'. Andy was speechless, at the moment she thought she would not get the job. But the interviewer said that he had received a testimonial from Miranda herself saying that he was a fool if he didn't hire Andy. So Andy got the job.

On her way home, Andy walked pass 'Runway' building and she called Emily. Emily who was obviously angry with Andy (for going to Paris and subsequently left her job, making Emily busier than ever, did not sound so friendly to receive her call. But Andy quickly said now she's no longer working in the fashion line, she just wanted to give her all the glamorous free dresses she received in Paris (one of the reason why Emily wanted to go to Paris so much). Emily softened down and agreed to accept the dresses. Then when Andy hang up she saw Miranda on her way to get into a car. When Miranda noticed Andy was there, Andy quickly raised her hand to acknowledge Miranda. Miranda as cold as she was always be, didn't even smile back and got into the car. But she was smiling then. Andy, knowing now what good deed Miranda had done for her, walked away and smiled.

End of story.

*************************************************************************************

Well, I know how it felt to have an evil boss. I guess who have been reading my blog from beginning, know better. Anyway, in Andy's case, she's a PA (personal assistant) so she got to do whatever it is that corcerning her boss. But I was ARE (assistant Resident Engineer) so my job scope should not involve anything personal including being a driver when my boss didn't feel like driving.

Oh, on this driving issue, I'm smiling right now when I remembered back what I've gone through. I guess I haven't told driver story things yet in my blog.

My ex-boss lived in Muar, I lived in Melaka and we worked in Yong Peng. So when he didn't feel like driving, he called me up early in the morning to fetch him at his house and he told me it didn't have to be so early. I remember on one occasion, he asked me to be at his house at 10 am, and I complied. When I arrived there, her elderly mother told me he went out for some business, and I was to wait. Know how long I waited? 2 hours!!! And that happened quite frequently, my ex-colleagues always asked how long did I waited everytime I had to be the driver....huhuhu

That one of those horrible things I've experienced. So I'm telling you guys, if you happen to have a devil boss, get away from him/her as soon as possible. Even if it a dream job! It's not good for your health, not good for your inner strength too. Working for someone evil would probably make you an evil too one day if you fail to manage yourself.

Saya malas update blog kerana....

Hehehe..cik Dal sudah tegur aku malas update blog. Ko ni mcm Nuffnang la Dal! (Though aku tak serve mana2 advertisement board). And ntah kenapa aku layankan juga...maybe sbb pagi ni aku bangun kul 5.30 am. Waktu yg aman damai untuk aku mengadap laptop.

Kenapa aku malas update blog?

Patut skrg aku dah x pegi kelas bahasa, aku lagi byk masa la kan? Wrong!

Aku ada jadual seharian yg aku buat utk aku lebih berdisiplin dan aku juga ada projek! Aku dah start home schooling...

And in between aku ada cita2 murni yg lain: buat exercise, buat kuih, nak practise buat kek....
Lepas tu kalau aku ada masa pon, everytime aku ngadap aje laptop nak start blogging, ada je permintaan2 3 org ahli keluarga aku ni "umi, nak susu", "umi, nak berak", "ni, nak kopi".

So mood aku nak berblogging pon hilang, sbb aku dah x leh nak concentrate apa aku nak tulis. And then aktiviti in the Internet is too many....FB la, YM la, torrent la, cari resepi lagi...bla...bla...bla.

Tapi somehow aku akan tetap berblogging sbb aku suka!!!!

Dal, thank you sbb ingatkan aku....n ko pon jgn lupa update gak tau!

Good Bye Deutsch Course

Yep, I've quit the Deutsch course. Not that now I'm already good enough in the language but it's the choice I made to give priority to some other things in terms of financial and time. No, the fee isn't expensive. Since January, Lukas only asked me to pay 100 Euro a month despite the full amount of 230 Euro. But with the travelling and miscellaneous costs, it is quite a substantial amount. And if we want to go for vacation, there would be no extra money for that purpose.
Anyhow, after 4 months in the course, at least now I can speak little Deutsch, understand and read better. Before coming to Germany, I didn't even know one single word in Deutsch, not even the simple 'Danke' or 'Bitte'. I didn't even bother to know because I thought I can survive in English!
But now when I go shopping, I can at least communicate with the sales girl or the cashier. The other day, I was paying the groceries at this Asia Shop and I had noticed the cashier had keyed in the wrong price for one of the items. Thank God I managed to tell her that she was wrong and she understood perfectly. At the butcher shop, now I can tell the butchery how many kilos meat/chicken I want to buy and how I want my meat to be cut. It is all the simple sentences but play important roles in my daily life.
The other day, I was waiting for the train to go home, a lady greeted me and we started having a conversation in Deutsch. Though I struggled to form the sentences, the lady said for someone who had just learnt Deutsch in 4 months time, I'm quite good. Hehehe...the comment really made me happy.
For that I thank Lukas for his great teaching skills. He's really a good teacher not only in his teaching skills but for his concern and kindness. I don't know if I go to another language institute, I would get the same discount I got here. I don't know if I can see again a teacher who would make a mug of hot tea for his sick student, or keep a box of paracetamol and offer them to the students who in needs. Or make sure that the pantry is always loaded with drinks and snacks (we only pay 1 Euro a month for Kaffee Geld but I doubt it covers all the various kind of tea, coffee, biscuits, bla...bla...).
I think I'm going to miss this course (except for those who annoy me!). I already made friend with several people in the class and I enjoyed being in their company. Especially with Zainab, a Jordanian lady who gave me a lot of cooking tips and recently gave me several hand-down children books. She even said since she's going back to Jordan next month, she would buy some iqra' books for my twins ( as I told her I'm planning to teach my kids to read Quran soon).
Well, hopefully I'm not going to forget what I have learnt in this course.

Die Fastnacht & Sushi Essen

Suppose to blog about this entry much earlier but since blogging mood is not really there plus I keep fighting with cik HB to use the laptop (uwaa....I'm longing to have my own, tp duit xde lagi maa.... ).

Despite the not-so-good weather, that Sunday (which I had mentioned in the previous post), off we went to Frankfurt to watch Die Fastnacht Parade. It was quite interesting to see such a parade, people in their weird yet colourful and fascinating costum dress, with music bands, cheerleaders and so many other characters. From kids to elderly had participated in the parade. The most exciting part, these people threw chocolates and bonbons from their wagons to the audience along the road, so catching them was so fun.

Tgk la org2 berebut nak tangkap coklat, tadah ngan topi satu hal, siap ada yg tadah yg payung yg diterbalik!

Kesian betul tgk budak pompuan kat tgh2 tu, muka ngantuk...

Lagi budak2 comel...

However we didn't stay very long because it started drizzling. I was afraid the twins would catch a cold. After prayers, we went for dinner at a Japanese restaurant which serves sushi on buffet style. Sushi is always my favourite, sgt la puas hati dapat makan dgn banyaknya...hehehe.

My fav: Sushi and green tea

Sun please come out....

Kak Ina, Mat and Liza invited me and and the kids to go to Frankfurt today (cik HB not included sbb dia tgh exam, esok ada lg satu paper, so dok rumah diam2 study ye!). There will be a Fastnacht Parade, which wikipedia defines as follows:
"Fastnacht or Fasnacht is the pre-Lenten carnival in Alemannic folklore in Switzerland, southern Germany, Alsace and western Austria.
It is also known in parts of
Pennsylvania Dutch Country as Fasnacht Day and is celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the last Tuesday before Lent."
Don't ask me in details what is it about, I don't know too, that is why I'm hoping to see the parade. Kak Ina said if it is not raining or snowing today, we'll go in the afternoon.
But now at 8.15 am, it's very cloudy and gloomy. Looks like it's going to rain soon. If today suppose to be a good fine day, by now the sun is shining brightly. But I doubt it will be, hence looks like we are not going to see the parade.
Ok, need to get going with my housechores. I still hope sun will appear soon....

Turki2 yang sengal...

Sgt racist kah bunyi?
Oh! Tak kira...aku geram! Mcm biasa, seperti zaman aku keje dulu, rasa x puas hati aku luahkan dalam blog. Dan lagi best tulis dalam bahasa Melayu la kan...
Ingat mamat Turki yg aku penah cerita pasal dia kutuk the way aku ckp Jerman? Mmg dia ni ari2 buat hal dlm kelas, samada dia kutuk org lain terang2an atau dia bg statement perkauman yg sarcastic tanpa mengira perasaan org lain. Dan nasib dia baik sbb Lukas seorg yg baik, anything yg come out sarcastic dr dia, Lukas akan cepat2 make it as a joke or tukar topic. Aku rasa kalau aku jadi cikgu, aku sound dia, huh!
Alkisahnya ari ni masuk seorg student lelaki baru asal dr Rusia. Tp dia dah kira boleh faham dan bercakap Jerman. So mamat Rusia ni pon amik la tempat si mamat Turki ni. Mmg kitorg xde specific tempat pon dalam kelas ni but those yg dah lama dok dlm kelas tu inofficially tau la tempat duduk sapa and sapa. Pulak kelas tu mmg full, though ada yg dah quit or baru masuk, then quit pulak. So yg baru dtg, mana la diorg tau. Tempat aku pon selalu kena rembat ngan these newcomers but most of them tak stay long. And kalau nak sgt tempat tu dtg la awal kan...
Ni si mamat Turki tu dah la dtg sejam lambat, then boleh bising2 pulak tempat duduk dia kena amik. Tapi sbb semua org tak layan dia, nak tak nak terpaksa jugak dia duduk tempat lain, which was directly belakang aku. Pastu tak abis2 memekak lg pasal tempat duduk dia kena amik. Aku ni dah la mmg tak suka dia, tambah2 dia memekak mcm mak nenek belakang aku, aduss...tercabar sungguh la! Then masa dictation test, asik2 suh Lukas repeat (which is mmg kebiasaan dia la). Sebelum ni aku x kisah sgt, sbb yg lain2 pon sama. Kalau aku jadi Lukas, aku baca 2 kali aje, then pepandai la ko nak eja camna (tu pasal kot aku tak sesuai jadi cikgu?) Tp sbb dia dok belakang aku dan tak abis2 "wie bitte" or "noch einmal", annoying sungguh aku rasa!
Then sorang lg minah Turki ni, tak tahu la apa masalah dia tp asik kepanasan. Peliknya aku time winter camni dia boleh rasa panas. Heizung (heater) on at Level 2 pon dia kata mcm dalam sauna, end up dia asik gi buka pintu balkon which is mmg sgt sejuk la especially sapa2 yg dok directly depan pintu balkon termasuk aku. Selalu la Lukas tutup balik tp sekejap aje pastu minah tu pi buka balik. I mean kalau ramai yg kepanasan satu hal la, tp dia sorang2 aje...pulak tu xde ke fikir org2 lain kesejukan bila dia buka pintu tu? Haiyah...sikit pon tak fikir orang lain!
Kisah di Kinderbetreuung (nursery) pulak ada satu babysitter(BS) Turki jugak. Tp dia buat part-time aje. Cuma ada pd ari Isnin, Rabu dan Jumaat. Cuma babysitter dr Rusia tu aje yg permanent dan ari2 ada. Dgn BS Rusia ni aku mmg sgt selesa ngan dia sbb dia mmg sgt baik, sgt motherly dan sgt mesra ngan budak2 termasuk la si kembar. Tp ngan BS Turki aku notice dia mmg garang ngan budak2 then asik nak mengemas aje keje dia. Kalau ari2 yg dia ada, budak2 mcm x leh main apa2...semua dia pi simpan balik. Kalu time Pause (rehat) aku and other mums akan pi situ bg anak2 kami makan. Nanti dia tak abis2 kutip serpih2 makanan yg kecik2 tu...kalau dah abis makan tu lain la, ni kitorg dok tgh makan! Lgpon bukan makan nasi ok! Makan roti, buah, biskut...bukannya bersepah mana pon! Ada satu ari tu dia cakap ngan aku "Schokolade ist verboten in Kinderbetreuung" (coklat adalah dilarang di Kinderbetreuung) so aku pon percaya la, jadinya instead of bawa coklat or apa2 makanan berunsurkan coklat, aku bawa biskut kering aje. Apparently si BS Turki yg buat rules tu sbb dia x suka tgk budak2 comot makan coklat!
